The Japanese company Shimano is without a doubt one of the most important manufacturers of high-quality bicycle components and accessories worldwide. Back in 2010, Shimano presented its first own e-bike drive system called “STEPS” (Shimano Total Electric Power Systems). Later, and exactly in 2014, Shimano released several new motors known as the E5000, E6000, E6100, E7000, and E8000 to accomodate for the specific requirements of urban, road, and the most demanding mountain bikes models. The less powerful of the Shimano motors is the E5000 which delivers a max torque of 40Nm, followed by the E6100 Cargo, E6100, E7000, and the E8000 motors which are more powerful delivering a max torque of 60Nm respectively. In August 2020, Shimano announced the release of the EP8 motor with the most awaited torque increase of 21% (85Nm) to match the torque delivery of the most popular brands such as Bosch and Yamaha, The new EP8 motor is also 10% lighter and weight 2.6 kg, 300g lighter than the previous E8000 motor. Then, in 2022 the EP6 or EP600 motor was released. The EP6 is 400g heavier (3.0 kg) than the EP8 motor but it is also cheaper. The weight increase and the price reduction is due to the material of the casing which is aluminium instead of the lighter and costly magnesium built of the EP8. 

ENGINE PLUGS COMPATIBILITY:

The EP8 engine comes with completely different engine plugs and thus are NOT compatible with the engine plugs of the Shimano E8000, E7000, E6100, and E5000 engine series.

SHIMANO TUNING BRANDS

The badassBox is a contactless tuning box that simply slide over the speed sensor and it is installed / removed in just a few clicks. Speed accuracy is displayed only up to 24 km/h. badassBox Shimano models are compatible with several speed sensor shapes and speed sensor locations and thus are not subject to the compatibility with the E-Tube Port configuration. Just check your bicycle speed sensor configuration that matches with the compatible badassbox model.

SpeedFun was one of the first manufacturer of tuning on the market. For the Shimano motor we do have the SpeedFun Shimano EP8. Completely unlock the speed of the engine. Speed is displayed correctly up to 24 km/h and falsified thereafter. The tuning is always activated.

The MBIQ is a tuning that operates via a micro-controller processor. The MBIQ tunings are the smallest tuning if compared to the other tunings on the market. Due to this property, the electronics that operates the tuning are directly incapsulated into the speed sensor which makes the tuning completely invisible. The MBIQ are programmable and thus the tuning can be activated and deactivated and also programmed for setting up the max speed assist by just following a sequence of wheel rotations. 

SPEEDBOX TUNING:  HOW TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT ONE

For the SpeedBox Shimano tunings please check if there is a wire inserted into the engine E-Tube Port. E-bikes, which do not have a free E-Tube port, are usually those with a Di2 electronic gear shifting system, with a tube integrated Satellite System ON/OFF Switch (EW-SW100, EW-SW300), or all e-bikes with E5000 motor.

In 2022 Bosch released the new Bosch Gen4 Smart System which Bosch call it the “BES3” and stands for “Bosch Ebike System 3”. For the general public, the new Bosch Smart System is also known as the Bosch Gen5. The main focus on the development of the BES3 was to expand into the digital e-bike smart networking system. In fact, the new engine is compatible with the” eBike Flow App” with the KIOX 300 display.

ENGINE PLUGS AND TUNING COMPATIBILITY: The new 2022 Bosch Smart System comes with completely new engine plugs which are rounded in shape. The previous generation of Bosch engines does have squared plugs and therefore are NOT compatible with the new Smart System motor ports.

MAGNET ON THE AIR-VALVE: As for today, there are no tuning available for the Bosch System with the MAGNET on the AIR-Valve. Surely, the tuning manufacturers are working on a solution for this system. TUNINGS FOR BOSCH SMART SYSTEM BES3

The Bosch Smart System is a more complex and advanced drive unit than its predecessor which does not allows to program the tuning to communicate with the engine software as for previous engine. For this main reason, the displayed speed will be inaccurate with the basic tuning method. If the accuracy of the speedometer is important for you then the only tuning solution available is the SpeedBox B.tuning version which display the correct travelled speed directly on your mobile phone. 

VOLspeed Bosch Smart System Speed is limited to 45 km/h. Displayed speed is not accurated. Allows to modify the engine behaviour. Allows to set up the maximum assisted speed

Speedbox 1.0 Bosch Completely remove the speed limitation. Retains speedometer accuracy up to 22 kmh then speed will displayed on the last two digit (23.1 will correspond to 31 kmh)

It is not a surprise that the first tuning to be produced were designed to unlock these Bosch motors.

The first engine produced was the Bosch Classic Line (Gen1) up to 2014. The Gen2 engines Active Line and Performance Line (produced from 2014) and the Performance Line CX (from 2015). The US manufacturer Specialized is well known in the e-bike industry for innovation, performance, and outstanding quality of build. It does not come as a surprise to see many ebike manufacturers following their footprint. Specialized equip their ebike fleet with the Brose engines but with a completely redesigned software which deliver a smoother support behaviour and an extremely natural driving experience. Another appealing feature of these engines is the decoupling of the crankshaft and the motor shaft. As a result, there is no pedalling resistance when you ride faster than the maximum supported 25 km/h (without tuning).

There are now several generations of the Specialized engines which have been continuously optimized. The company’s most important engines at the moment include the Specialized 1.2 E (50 Nm), which has been optimized for particularly low energy consumption, the more powerful Specialized 1.3 (90 Nm), and the Specialized 2.1 (90 Nm) which is extremely light and has been tailored for e-mountain bikes with a pedalling power of up to 410% for climbing steep hills. The Brose Drive S Mag engines serves as the basis, but it was also equipped with its own software. All Specialized Turbo Levo FSR models have been equipped with this engines since model year 2019.

Specialized Tuning kits that connects into the TCU

In our personal opinion the SpeedFun Ribelle here really stands out since it connects directly on the TCU and installation does not take more than 1 minute. Furthermore, it retains the accuracy of the speedometer and the distance travelled and thus there is no need to use an external phone app to monitor the correct travelled speed and distance. The SpeedFun Ribelle Specialized is compatible with the Turbo 2.1 and Turbo Full Power System 2.2. It is not compatible with the 1.1 motors such as the SL models.

In comparison, the latest generation of the Levociraptor Gen 2 are compatible with all Specialized motors such as the 1.1, 2.1, and 2.2 (SL series) allowing for speeds up to 72 km/h. The Gen 2 comes with Bluetooth connectivity (BT) and an extra app (BLEvo App, currently only compatible with Androids phones) that allows you to monitor via you phone the correct travelled speed and distance. Furthermore, the BLEvo app offers several appealing applications such as the 5 options to select speed, barometer, thermometer, crash detection to mention a few. To complete the selection of Specialized tunings that connects directly into the top frame TCU, we do have the basic Levociraptor Gen 1 which is only compatible with Specialized motors 2.1 and 2.2. The Levociraptor Gen 1 comes with 6 selectable speed settings for speeds up to 86 km/h. The Levociraptor Gen1 does not retain the accuracy of the speedometer and distance travelled and it is NOT compatible with the SL engine models. 

SpeedFun Ribelle Specialized for Turbo Levo, Turbo Kenevo, and Turbo Tero. Retains the accuracy of the speedometer and the distance travelled. For maximum speed above 60 km/h.

The Giant engines were first introduced in 2017 with the release of the SyncDrive. The SyncDrive (70 Nm) is basically a Yamaha engine but with a completely redesigned software by Giant. The original software was optimised to deliver thrust with the first turn of the crank without any delay (Zero Cadence Support). Later on, the SyncDrive Pro engine was released to satisfy the requirement for the most demanding e-MTB riders. The SyncDrive Pro was based on the powerful Yamaha PW-X motor (80 Nm & 360% support). For e-bike designed for trekking & touring Giant developed a more dynamic engine SyncDrive Sport with 80 Nm of torque. The SyncDrive Life (60Nm) is the less powerful Giant engine.

In 2021, Yamaha released the new Yamaha PW-X3 motor which is smaller, lighter, and slightly more powerful that its predecessor. This new engine, which Giant renamed the SyncDrive Pro motor, delivers 85Nm of torque, an increase of 5Nm  over the previous motor, to be inline with the powerful range of the Bosch and Shimano motors.  However, the main advantage of the SyncDrive Pro is that the new motor is 10% lighter at 2.7 kg and 20% smaller. The design of the engine allows for an extra ground clearance of 37mm. Furthermore, the new drive unit system includes the RideControlGo, a new user interface built into the top tube to monitor the battery level and chosen motor support mode.

ON THE NOTE: The engine plugs of the new 2021 Giant SyncDrive Pro motor with RideControlGo have been updated and thus the Giant tuning pre-2021 are not compatible with the new Giant SyncDrive Pro motor

YAMAHA: These engines were first produced in 2014 and since then they have been used to equip many e-bikes brands. The first Yamaha PW (Powerdrive) engine was light and compact with a power output of 70 Nm. In 2017, the new Yamaha PW-X engine was released with was specifically designed for e-MTB usage. In 2018 the Yamaha PW-SE (Powerdrive-Sport Edition) was released. The Sport Edition engine could be positioned between the PW and the PW-X models. Fazua is a German company from Bavaria which released their first engine in 2017. The launch of the Fazua Evation engine system immediately caught the attention from the public and from e-bike manufacturers due to its unique design. Per example, the conventional setup of having the heavy drive unit mounted on the bottom bracket has been replaced by the gear unit. The gear unit transmits the power of the motor to the drive which can determine the pedalling force of the rider by using several sensors. The actual motor is located in a cylindrical extension along with the battery to form a single unit. This unique concept makes it possible to decouple the motor unit and gearbox so that the Evation can be easily removed from the frame with just one click.

In 2022, a new drive system is released, the FAZUA Ride 60. This new drive system is more powerful than its predecessor, with an additional 10 Nm of extra torque totalling a max torque of 60Nm. The Fazua Ride 60 motor weights only 1.96 kg and thus an excellent power / weight ratio. 

We do have in store a couple of tuning solution for the Fazua engines. The SpeedFun Fazua does a good job here since the installation is simple and do not require to dissemble the engine to access the engine ports. Another good option is the BadassBox 4 Fazua since it is a contact-less tuning box that simply slide over the speed sensor and it is installed / removed in just few clicks. It is compatible only if the magnet is located on the wheel spoke.

SpeedFun Fazua Ride 60 compatible only with the Fazua Ride 60 engines. The maximum assisted speed is 50 km/h. The correct speed is displayed up to 25 km/h, then from 20 km/h to 42, the speed is halved. For speed above 42 km/h the speed is divide by 3.

SpeedFun Fazua is NOT compatible with the Fazua Ride 60 engines. The maximum assisted speed is 50 km/h. Rocky Mountain e-bike are well known for their high quality of built and their extremely powerful engines which make them one of the best e-bikes ever. The first Rocky Mountain engine was developed in 2009 but only in 2012 with the release of the 2^nd generation engine (Dyname 2.0) the first engine was mounted on an ebike, in this case it was mounted on an urban ebike. The first Altitude Powerplay, which is the 3^rd generation of the Dyname engine was first released in 2017. in 2019, three more engines were added to the Dyname family – Altitude Powerplay, Instinct Powerplay, and Growler Powerplay.

In the late 2021, Rocky Mountain announced the release of the 4th generation of the Dyname engine (Dyname 4.0). The new drive system delivers the same torque as its predecessor (108 Nm) and it is 18.5% lighter. But there is more to add to this class-leading engine since the Dyname 4.0 drive unit has now a torque sensor that reads the tension applied to the chain allowing the engine to gradually reach maximum power without unwanted lag time. In addition to this, a new torque curve has been developed which allows the engine to reach maximum power at lower rpm (85 rpm). 

There aren’t many tuning for the Rocky Mountain however we have in store the best tuning available on the market to suit these powerful engines.The SpeedFun is a very small tuning device that allows to exploit the full potential of these powerful engines allowing for speed up to 50 km/h. The Planet 3 is a mechanical tuning which employs a planetary mechanical gearing system to triple the speed limitation of the engine. This tuning is installed on the rear hub.

The MAHLE Ebike Motion X35 and X35+ engines are designed specifically for e-road bike. The innovative Ebike Motion X35 and X35+ engine is a hub engine with only 40Nm of torque. In contrast to the conventional engines that provides assistance based on cadence or power input the Mahle engines the outputs power is based on how quickly the cassette is turning relative to the hub. This design means the Mahle drive can be tricked into riding with basically no input from the rider. As long as you keep the cassette and hub turning together, the motor continues to push forward – there’s no torque sensor to detect your lack of pedalling input as the system operates based on the speed of your cassette in relation to how quickly the wheel is turning.

In 2022, Mahle released the new Ebike Motion X20 drive unit following the foot steps of other manufacturers developing a more powerful and lighter engine. In fact, the Ebike Motion X20 motor delivers a torque of 60Nm (50% more torque than the X35 motor) and weights only 3.2 kg (10% lighter than the X35 motor).

There aren’t many tunings available in today market to derestrict the X35 and X35+ engines. The EPAspeed engineers have excelled in developing the tuning for the Mahle engines because as for today it is the only tuning that retains the accuracy of the speed on both the e-bike display and on the Ebike Motion App. Moreover, it allows for speed up to 40kmh depending on the motor, firmware, and battery of your drive system. However, due to the limitation of the hub motor and the 40Nm of torque it is acceptable that speeds will be in the 30kmh range. 

The SpeedFun does really do a good job for its quality of built and for its slim feature but it does not retain the accuracy of the travelled speed. 

NOTE: Due to the constructive characteristics of the hub motor with the speed sensor integrated into the hub motor it is difficult to predict the maximum derestricted speed allowed. Theoretically, speeds of up to 40 km/h are possible but in reality speeds of up to 30 km/h are within the tolerance range. This is due to the fact that it is a hub motor with 40 Nm of torque which quickly reaches its limits. If the tuning does not allow for higher speeds, this is not caused by the tuning itself but instead it is related to the limitations of the motor, battery and their firmware.

EPAspeed Mahle Ebike Motion X35 and X35+ real speed value from the display (if you bike is equipped with one) and from the Ebike Motion App. Easy to install / remove. Can allow for higher speed depending on your e-bike battery, firmware, and engine configuration but 30kmh is in the acceptable range. 

SpeedFun Ebike Motion X35 Easy installation that plugs directly on the speed sensor cable on the swing arm. Does NOT retain the speedometer accuracy on the display and also on the Ebike Motion App.
